Red Thunder Air Team -- Russian YAK-52; Chinese Nanchang CJ-6;

Big smoke, wonderful sounds of big radial engine airplanes and the thrills of an air show.  All of this plus precision close formation warbird demonstrations when the featured “Red Thunder” aerial demonstration team performs at The Great Georgia Airshow!

Enjoy the ballet of the aerial precision and be stunned by the dominance of these former eastern block airplanes.  Some of the formations demonstrated by the Red Thunder Pilots are formation take-offs, finger tip flight, the opposing pass, and their signature the “Delta Diamond Starburst.”  The wing tip distance between the aircraft during these formations is only about 3 to 4 feet.  Regardless of how slow or how fast and airplane may be, anytime a pilot places his wingtip within 3 feet of another airplane, it requires extreme concentration, skill and hundreds of hours of practice.

“Red Thunder” airplanes feature the Russian YAK-52 and the Chinese Nanchang CJ-6.  Tim Williams of Lake Martin, AL is the Team Leader and offered this:  “Our team offers people an opportunity to see these stunning eastern block airplanes up close and personal.  A chance to see airplanes that only a few years ago would have been impossible here in the United States.”  Today there are around 500 Russian Yaks and Chinese airplanes in the U.S.  When asked about his remarkable airplane, Solo aerobatic pilot Jimmy Fordham of Monroe, LA answered “I fly the YAK-52, formally used by the Soviet Air Force to train fighter pilots; it’s an airplane that turns heads at every airport.  It has fantastic maneuvering qualities and will turn on a dime.”

Red Thunder airplanes are flown by pilots with varying backgrounds including former military pilots, commercial pilots flying for the airlines and civilian trained pilots.  They love to talk about their airplanes, so please make a point to meet and talk with them.

US ARMY Golden Knights Parachute Team -- Parachute Demo Team

NEW -- US ARMY Golden Knights Parachute Team
Aerial Prescion, Exciting Action -- The Best in the World!

As the “Official Ambassadors of the Army,” the Team annually reaches a third of our nation by performing spectacular live parachute demonstrations for the American public, manifesting the “Band of Excellence” as displayed by all U.S. Army Soldiers around the world.

The demonstration teams perform two different shows from an altitude of 12,500 feet. The mass show entails one jumper exiting the aircraft and flying our national colors. This Soldier will then narrate the show for the audience while the rest of the team exits the aircraft maneuvering together to form one large mass formation.

The full show consists of four separate maneuvers, which demonstrate the maneuverability of the human body while falling at speeds in excess of 120mph!

Baton Pass
The first maneuver, the baton pass, entails two jumpers exiting the aircraft separately and flying together to exchange a 14 inch mahogany baton.

Cutaway
The cutaway maneuver is designed to show what would occur if the jumper’s parachute was to malfunction.

Diamond Track
The diamond track demonstrates the incredible amount of lateral movement a jumper can obtain in free-fall.

Diamond Formation
The final maneuver of the full show is the diamond formation. Four jumpers exit the aircraft and constantly maneuver their bodies closer together until they are mere inches apart, forming a diamond shape in the sky.

The men and women who wear the distinctive black and gold uniform of the United States Army Parachute Team represent the “Band of Excellence” and the “Warrior Ethos” that are continually demonstrated by all U.S. Army Soldiers in our Global War on Terrorism and represent the best precision free-fall team in the world.

As they travel across the nation and around the world, the Golden Knights serve as Ambassadors of the U.S. Army. These professional Soldiers proudly serve the country with pride, skill and enthusiasm.

AV-8B Harrier II Marine Demonstration Team -- Harrier

NEW -- Marine AV-8B Harrier II Demo Team!
Grab your ear plugs!  These guys are Loud and Powerful!  Energy and Excitement Like Never Before!

The AV-8B Harrier II demonstration is one of the most sought-after aerial demonstrations offered by the U.S. military. The Marine Corps does not have a dedicated AV-8B II Harrier demonstration team, so demonstrations are performed by the same aircraft and Marines who train and deploy in support of real-world contingencies, including on-going operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. For this reason, Headquarters Marine Corps selects a handful of events to receive the coveted demonstration during the annual Harrier Demonstration and Osprey Static Display Board.

The Commemorative Air Force is a patriotic organization dedicated to the preservation of the world's greatest World War II combat aircraft (flown from 1939 to 1945). Our organization is the 16th largest Air Force and owns more World War II aircraft than any other organization or individual. The CAF is a 501c(3) corporation and all donations are tax deductible.

The Dixie Wing was approved as the 83rd CAF unit on February 28, 1987, and has since displayed its collection of vintage World War II aircraft in numerous air shows throughout the Southeast. Membership in the wing has grown steadily to its present level of over 250 Colonels, with maintenance and restoration activities being carried out in the Atlanta area. The Dixie Wing is a non-profit, tax-exempt "flying museum" that depends on contributions of time and funds to carry out its mission.

The members of the Dixie Wing come from all walks of life and range in age from 19 to 80. We have aircraft mechanics, students, retired folks, housewives, airline pilots, salesmen, construction workers and many more who are all interested in World War II aircraft. Come to a meeting, hear about our activities and meet some of our members. We also have a cadet program for young persons from age 13 to 18. These young folks will learn about our World War II heritage, take field trips, learn about aircraft maintenance, help maintain our aircraft under the supervision of licensed Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, learn leadership and teamwork, and actually get to fly in our aircraft.
